Septic Tank Maintenance

Proper septic tank maintenance is crucial for the system to work properly; it is easy to do and should be done every 6 to 12 months. Having a well maintained tank will also help with the longevity of your pumps and dispersal field. Never go inside the tank without the proper equipment and training.

Step 1:  Visual/smell assessment

• Check for any major ground disturbance
• Check for any foul odor coming from the tank
• Check to make sure your lids are not cracked and are sitting properly on the manway/extension

Step 2: Remove lid to compartment 1 (working side)

• Check to make sure the manway/extension is not damaged
• Check to see if there is groundwater coming through the manway/extension
• You should see a layer of scum on the top of the wastewater
• The level of sewage should be below the top of the tank
• You should have your solids removed every 2 or 3 years
• Never add a chemical to your tank

Step 3: Remove lid to compartment 2 (pump chamber)

• Check to make sure the manway/extension is not damaged
• Check to see if there is groundwater coming through the manway/extension
• Check to make sure the floats are not tangled
• Lift up the high level alarm float and check for alarm
• Lift the pump float and make sure the pump turns on
• Check to see if any of your electrical cords are cracked or broken
• Clean any filters you may have
